Team of 5 from Hindustan University display the UAV at Aero India 2015

Chennai, February 2014: A team of five engineering students from Hindustan University, Chennai have displayed an an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at the Aero India 2015 held at Bangalore. This is expected to be the lightest UAV on display at Aero India 2015. The UAV, which weighs only 2.5 kg, has been named Draupadi after the mythological wife of the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata.

“Draupadi” has been designed by students of the Hindustan Group of Institutions from Chennai and they have managed to reduce the weight of the UAV by 2 kg, using alternative materials in building the prototype. The UAV can be controlled electronically and live feed is received on a cellphone.

Last year the team participate in the International Micro Air Vehicles show held in the Netherlands.

Rejish Laljohson, one of the developers, said that the light weight of the prototype has considerably increased its flying duration. “For instance, a UAV weighing 4 kilos with an additional pay load, could fly about 40 minutes. But the Draupadi prototype can fly an additional 20 minutes due to its lighter weight. It has been tested successfully with camera recordings and we have also received live feed on the cellphone. A telemetry device attached to the UAV resends the video clipping on a mobile. This will make the job on the ground easy. One need not carry heavy loads of equipment to fly a UAV any longer,” he explained.

Through the Orient Flight School of Pondicherry, the students from the University are given exposure to flying and handling older aircraft like the Cessna 152, Cessna 172R, Piper Seneca II and Beechcraft King Air C90S. “This helps the students to innovate and enhance the UAV prototype which is largely being seen as the future of aviation.”
