Celebrating 25 Years: Californian Anti ‘Fake News’ Organization Commemorates International Success

LOS ANGELES, CA – 10 Jul, 2017 – Meet Dr. Michael Shermer, California-native, and founder of nonprofit science education organization the Skeptics Society, as he prepares to ring in 25 years of combating “fake news”. Often considered a new phenomena, the Skeptics community have been exposing “alternative facts” longer than anyone else. The Skeptics Society was the first to investigate the Holocaust deniers, the first to debunk the 9/11 Truthers, and pioneered the method of letting the proponents of a belief speak for themselves. Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, Brannon Braga, Executive Producer of Star Trek, and artists across the entertainment industry now look to Skeptic magazine, the Skeptic Society’s quarterly publication, to combat our current culture of alternative facts.

For decades, Dr. Shermer and the Skeptic Society have focused on science education for all, with Junior Skeptic magazine and educational booklets for middle school and high school students available in every print edition of Skeptic magazine, a Science Lecture Series at Caltech, and the Science Salon speaker series, which over the past 25 years have featured prominent scientists and scholars of our time: Bill Nye, Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, Lisa Randall, Stephen Jay Gould, Carol Tavris, Lawrence Krauss, and Janna Levin.

Once a fringe movement, today’s skeptical community now deals with the biggest and most important issues of our time: terrorism, religion, gun violence, climate change, alternative medicine, and science education. Fighting for scientific fact in the face of fallacy has become a worldwide movement; the Skeptic Society now hosts chapters all over the globe including England, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
