The Saving With A Goal Program Simplifies Financial Management for Children

Parents who want to teach financial management to their children but do not know where to start now have an ally in the new program, Saving With A Goal -S.W.A.G.

ALBANY, NY – Financial responsibility is one of the most important lessons that parents can teach their children. Sadly, many parents miss the opportunity to teach this valuable lesson which often results in the disastrous consequences for the children when they become adults. In fact, in a survey conducted by ING  Direct, 87% of teens admitted to not knowing about personal finance, and the average score of 10-14-year-olds in a financial literacy test conducted by National Financial Educators Council’s  was 54%.

Written by LaDonna N. Smith, The Money Tree is a helpful and interesting resource that explains basic financial concepts and practices in plain and easy to understand language that children can comprehend and use in their day-to-day lives. The book features clear text and playful illustrations that simplify financial concepts like earning, saving, interest, the difference between needs and wants, and the joy of running one’s own business. To reinforce the concepts taught in the story, the book also comes with a money savings chart.

A Certified Financial Educator, Smith, is passionate about educating youth on financial empowerment. When asked about the inspiration for writing the book, she explained: “My parents never taught me anything about personal finance. Therefore, I was inspired to write this book to help introduce my children and other children to money management in a way that they would understand.”

First published in 2013, The Money Tree is the winner of the 2014 Financial Literacy Children’s Book of the Year award. Since then, several parents have experienced the benefits of the book. One parent commented: “My kids enjoyed the book and asked me about opening a savings account right away! They now have a total of $1,000 each! I’m so happy that they’re into saving which will help them prioritize better in the future.”

Along with the release of The Money Tree, Smith recently launched a program called S.W.A.G. (Saving With A Goal), where she partners with both schools and banks to provide students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade with high-energy and interactive financial literacy workshops and music. “Saving With A Goal” workshops aide in providing a platform for children between that ages of 7 to 13 years old to learn (with the help of their parents) the knowledge, tools and practice they need to make informed financial decisions for their future. S.W.A.G!

The author also designed this workbook to be used in conjunction with the award-winning children’s book, “The Money Tree.” It provides over twenty practical activities to teach school-age children, third-grade through sixth-grade, basic money management. Each activity was designed to enforce a key personal finance concept and provide an easy and fun way for children to learn about money management.
