Application of Li-ion battery will bring revolution to the electric bike industry

Due to the big advantages of li-ion battery to traditional lead-acid battery, it has been gradually applied in electric bike industry, consequently lead to more compact, smarter and folding design of ebikes.

Why Ebike? Why li-ion ebike?  Why folding Li-ion ebike? 

The word “ebike” has been growing steadily in the google trends of search during the past 5 years,yet definition of so-called ebike is still vague to quite many people,even many users of Onebot T8 ebike doesn’t understand. 

What is ebike? According to Wikipedia, ebike should be short for electric bicycle, regardless that the rider uses pedal power or not. It adopts electric motor as assist/ only propulsion. Sometimes people believe electric motorcycle, or electric moped is more precise to descript this new 2(3) wheelers. However, apparently it looks much more compact, and is lighter than motorcycle and scooters. If not seeing the battery, you can hardly tell its difference from normal bikes. 

In fact, electric power comes from electric motor, and originally from rechargeable battery backup. Traditional batteries for electric bikes were lead-acid cell, around 16~30kg heavy. New energy revolution brings in much more competitive lithium-ion battery as optional choice. 

Compared to lead –acid batteries, li-ion batteries are 1/8 in weight and 1/3 in size, saving much more space and burden of the vehicle. They have around 900 rechargeable times lifespan, 2 to 3 times Vs the former’s 300~500 times. Say if the lead-acid batteries are normally called as 2 years lifespan, li-ion batteries will be 4~5 years. Also, the charging speed of li-ion batteries are 2 times fast as that of the lead-acid, meaning you save 50% time to plug the bike on charger. Capacity and charging speed of lead-acid batteries will also decrease significantly with the leaving of its lifespan. 

Pollution issue is another concern during the production and recycling of lead-acid batteries. Lead and other heavy metal elements are the major hazard. On the contrary Li-ion batteries doesn’t have the problem. 

At present, restriction for the growth of li-ion batteries is cost, since lead-acid batteries are less than 50% of the cost for same capacity li-ion batteries, 95% of the electric bikes in market are still equipped with the old type. However, it is expected in the near future, technology innovation and the mass application of li-ion battery will lower its cost down a lot. Yes, the extensive application of li-ion battery spreads from electric bus, electric car, electric carts to electric bikes and, also electric scooters, self- balance bikes etc. More and more people  realized  that an ebike should rather be short for “eco-friendly bike”, using green power without pollution, having longer period of life, more efficient in charging, and should be light and neat enough to save space.

Hence the appearance and growth of various pure li-ion folding ebikes since 2014, making maximum use of power consumption and space, solving the transportation problems for short and medium distance commuting or traveling. 

Many models can be folded and put into car trunk, some can be carried into subway/ bus, some mini size can even be put into a bag! 

And also some that can be either standing at corner or towed on the way after folded, like the Onebot T8 newly launched in August 2016.

Folding li-ion battery bikes integrates the features of green energy, longer lifespan, they are light in weight and smart in size, and usually the fashionable design for young people.
